You might be unable to count that high; I certainly can’t. Unfortunately, using turn signals has become less common, regardless of the fun and on-point memes shared across social media. What can we do about it?

Turn signals: what’s the point?

What are turn signals used for? These blinking lights along with the clicking sound associated with them, are an important part of traffic <a href=" Turning on your signal before slowing down for a turn is the best way to signal to other drivers your intent to turn and in which direction. Otherwise, you’re frustrating other people by slowing down without warning, causing them to wonder if they’re following an impaired driver.

Can you get a ticket for failure to use your turn signals?

Turn signal use is required in all states. Failure to signal your intent to turn before turning is considered a moving violation and could result in a traffic violation. In some states, the fines could be significant, but in South Carolina, the fine is $25, according to <a href=" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Justia. This source also states:

“No person shall turn a vehicle or move right or left upon a roadway unless and until such movement can be made with reasonable safety nor without giving an appropriate signal as provided for this section. A signal of intention to turn or move right or left when required shall be given continuously during not less than the last 100 feet traveled by the vehicle before turning.”

In simpler terms, you’re supposed to signal a turn at least 100 feet before the turn and use turn signals to indicate your intent to change lanes on multiple-lane highways.

Do all vehicles have turn signals?

All <a href=" have turn signals installed when they come from the factory. Diving on public roads requires vehicles with working turning indicators. These signals aren’t there for decoration but for a purpose. Apparently, the person who modified my motorcycle wasn’t aware of this and removed all the turn signals before I bought it. Guess what? The first thing I’m doing to it is reinstalling turn signals. They are an important safety feature.

Start with yourself

Like anything else in life, if you want something to improve and become better, you have to start with your shortcomings and work on those. Regarding turn indicators, this means consciously using these devices every time you turn. Signaling a turn into your driveway in your neighborhood might be overkill, but it doesn’t hurt to signal your intent to turn to other drivers.

Will automated turn signals be next? What could that look like?

Automotive technology has come a long way over the past few years. Unfortunately, automated turn signals aren’t part of the mix. Vehicles equipped with semi-autonomous driving systems that can change lanes have something close to this; this system activates the turn signal to change lanes before the action.

If automatic signals became a reality, the would likely have to utilize the navigation system. Otherwise, how could the vehicle know where you intend to turn before you do?

The bottom line is: please use your turn signals. It’s the law, and their use is necessary to keep roadways safer.
